How to Get Closer to Allah

Introduction

One of the greatest goals of a believer’s life is to develop a close, loving relationship with Allah. Islam teaches that Allah is near to His servants and responds to their calls. Drawing closer to Him brings peace, guidance, and success in this life and the Hereafter. But closeness to Allah requires sincerity, effort, and consistency.

1. Strengthen Your Faith (Iman)

  • Believe in Allah completely — His oneness, His attributes, and His right to be worshipped.

  • Reflect on His creation to increase certainty.

  • Avoid sins that weaken the heart and distance you from Allah.

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.”
(Surah Maryam 19:96)

2. Be Constant in Prayer (Salah)

  • Perform the five daily prayers on time, with humility and focus.

  • Add voluntary prayers (Sunnah and Nafl) to increase closeness.

  • Remember that Salah is your direct connection to Allah — without intermediaries.

“Prostrate and draw near [to Allah].”
(Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:19)

3. Remember Allah Often (Dhikr)

  • Recite phrases like SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) regularly.

  • Read morning and evening supplications.

  • Keep your tongue moist with remembrance so your heart stays alive.

“Remember Me; I will remember you.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:152)

4. Read and Reflect on the Qur’an

  • Read the Qur’an daily, even if only a few verses.

  • Study its meaning (Tafsir) and think about how to apply it in life.

  • The Qur’an is Allah’s direct message to you — approaching it with love will bring you closer to Him.

5. Make Sincere Du’a (Supplication)

  • Speak to Allah from your heart — in any language — asking for guidance, forgiveness, and strength.

  • Du’a can be made anytime, especially in moments of sincerity like during sujood (prostration), before Fajr, and on Fridays.

  • Trust that Allah hears you and will respond in the best way.

6. Obey Him and Avoid Sin

  • Fulfill the obligations He has set.

  • Stay away from prohibited actions and environments that lead to sin.

  • If you fall into mistakes, repent quickly and sincerely.

7. Serve Others for Allah’s Sake

  • Help the poor, care for the needy, and be kind to family, neighbors, and strangers.

  • Intend every good deed as a way to please Allah.

  • Service to others brings Allah’s love, as He loves those who do good.

8. Be Grateful and Patient

  • Thank Allah for every blessing, big and small.

  • Show patience in trials, knowing they are a means of purification and reward.

  • Gratitude and patience keep the heart close to Allah in all situations.

9. Keep Good Company

  • Surround yourself with people who remind you of Allah and encourage you to do good.

  • Avoid gatherings that distract you from your faith.

  • The company you keep greatly affects your closeness to Allah.

Conclusion

Getting closer to Allah is a lifelong journey that requires faith, action, and sincerity. By praying consistently, remembering Him often, studying His words, making du’a, and living a life of gratitude and service, you can strengthen your bond with your Creator. Allah promises His closeness to those who seek Him sincerely.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:186)
