b. ‘Alaqah (Clinging Substance)
Describes the embryo attaching itself to the wall of the uterus, much like a leech clings to a surface. This stage occurs in the second week after fertilization.
c. Mudghah (Chewed-like Lump)
Around the third and fourth week, the embryo takes a shape with somite formations resembling teeth marks on a chewed substance.
d. Formation of Bones and Flesh
The skeleton begins to form first, and then muscles and tissues develop to cover the bones—matching modern embryological findings.
e. “Another Creation”
Refers to the stage when the fetus gains a soul (ensoulment), marking the transition from mere biological life to a spiritually endowed human.
4. Consistency with Modern Science
Advances in microscopy and embryology in the 20th century confirmed that these stages match the sequence of human development in the womb. The precise descriptions in the Qur’an are seen by many scholars as a sign of divine knowledge.

The Qur’an highlights human embryonic development not just to inform but to inspire gratitude and humility:
“O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?”
