The Benefits of Al-Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)
The Benefits of Al-Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)
Introduction
Al-Istighfar means seeking forgiveness from Allah by sincerely repenting for one’s sins, whether they are major or minor, intentional or unintentional. It is one of the most beloved acts to Allah and a constant practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, even though he was sinless. Saying Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah) is not only a way to erase sins but also a key to mercy, blessings, and a peaceful heart.
1. Forgiveness of Sins
The primary benefit of Al-Istighfar is the forgiveness of sins. Allah promises in the Qur’an:
“And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:110)
No matter how great the sin, Allah’s mercy is greater. Continuous istighfar wipes away past mistakes and protects a believer from punishment.
2. A Source of Mercy and Love
Allah loves those who repent:
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)
Frequent istighfar brings a person closer to Allah and earns His love.
3. Increase in Blessings and Provision
The Prophet ﷺ narrated that istighfar brings sustenance and relief. The Qur’an tells us about Prophet Nuh (Noah) who said to his people:
“Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers, and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and rivers.”
(Surah Nuh 71:10-12)
This shows that istighfar is a cause for:
-
Increased rizq (provision)
-
Healthy offspring
-
Rain and prosperity
-
General well-being
4. Relief from Hardships
Life’s challenges, worries, and stresses can be eased through sincere istighfar. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever constantly seeks forgiveness, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he does not expect.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud)
Istighfar is a key to emotional peace and divine assistance.
5. Protection from Punishment
When people seek forgiveness sincerely, Allah’s punishment is lifted from them. In the Qur’an, Allah mentions that He would not punish a people as long as they are making istighfar:
“…And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.”
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:33)
6. Purification of the Heart
Sins leave dark spots on the heart, but istighfar polishes it, restoring its spiritual shine. A heart that regularly seeks forgiveness becomes softer, more humble, and more receptive to guidance.
7. Following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite being free of sin, used to say Astaghfirullah over 70 to 100 times a day (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). This shows its importance as a daily practice.
How to Make Istighfar
-
Verbally – Say phrases such as:
-
Astaghfirullah
-
Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh (I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him)
-
-
From the Heart – Feel sincere regret for the sin.
-
Action – Stop the sin immediately and avoid it in the future.
-
Good Deeds – Follow up bad deeds with good ones to erase them.
Conclusion
Al-Istighfar is a treasure of mercy, a remover of sins, and a door to endless blessings. It benefits a person in both this life and the next — bringing forgiveness, ease, provision, and peace of mind. No matter how many times we fall, returning to Allah through istighfar keeps us on the path of His mercy and love.
“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.”
(Surah Ghafir 40:55)
