The Benefits of Sending Salutations upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Introduction

Sending salutations (salat wa salam) upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — often by saying Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad — is one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam. It is a command from Allah and a way for believers to show love, respect, and gratitude to the final Messenger. This act brings immense blessings, removes sins, and elevates one’s rank in this life and the Hereafter.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56)

1. Obedience to Allah’s Command

When we send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ, we are directly following a command from Allah. This alone is a great honor and a sign of sincere faith.

2. Gaining Allah’s Mercy and Blessings

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This means each salat ‘ala an-Nabi is multiplied by tenfold blessings from Allah, which may include:

  • Increased provision

  • Protection from harm

  • Inner peace

3. Forgiveness of Sins

Sending salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ is a means of wiping away sins. The blessings from Allah that come as a result cleanse the heart and purify the soul.

4. Intercession on the Day of Judgment

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The closest people to me on the Day of Judgment are those who sent the most blessings upon me.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Frequent salutations draw us nearer to him on that day and make us eligible for his intercession.

5. Relief from Worries and Acceptance of Du‘a

A man once complained to the Prophet ﷺ about his worries, and the Prophet advised him to dedicate much of his supplication to sending blessings upon him. The man did so and found that:

  • His worries disappeared

  • His sins were forgiven
    (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

6. A Sign of Love for the Prophet ﷺ

Frequently sending salutations is a sign of deep love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. True love for him is part of faith and a means to be with him in Jannah.

7. Spiritual Light and Tranquility

This act fills the heart with peace, strengthens the bond with the Sunnah, and reminds the believer of the Prophet’s teachings and sacrifice for the ummah.

8. Angels Convey Your Salutations

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no one who sends peace upon me except that Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return the greeting to him.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud)

This means your greetings actually reach the Prophet ﷺ and he responds to them.

How to Send Salutations

One of the most complete forms is:

This is known as Salat Ibrahimiyya, recited in the final sitting of salah.

Conclusion

Sending salutations upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not just a ritual — it is a way to earn Allah’s mercy, increase our rank, and show love to the greatest human being. It protects from worries, brings blessings, and draws us closer to him in the Hereafter. The more you send salutations, the more you are honored by Allah.

Tip: Dedicate a portion of your day to sending at least 100 salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ, especially on Fridays, as it is a day of special virtue.
